Round and round and round they go! 16 ultra bright smart LED NeoPixels are arranged in a circle with 1.75" (44.5mm) outer diameter. The rings are 'chainable' - connect the output pin of one to the input pin of another. Use only one microcontroller pin to control as many as you can chain together! Each LED is addressable as the driver chip is inside the LED. Each one has ~18mA constant current drive so the color will be very consistent even if the voltage varies, and no external choke resistors are required making the design slim. Power the whole thing with 5VDC (4-7V works) and you're ready to rock.

There is a single data line with a very timing-specific protocol. Since the protocol is very sensitive to timing, it requires a real-time microconroller such as an AVR, Arduino, PIC, mbed, etc. It cannot be used with a Linux-based microcomputer or interpreted microcontroller such as the netduino or Basic Stamp. Our wonderfully-written Neopixel library for Arduino supports these pixels! As it requires hand-tuned assembly it is only for AVR cores but others may have ported this chip driver code so please google around. An 8MHz or faster processor is required.

Wonderful LED ring, but sensitive
This NeoPixel ring is outstanding. Build quality is excellent, the LEDs are bright (incredibly bright, actually), and the Adafruit NeoPixel library makes programming for the NeoPixel easy.

Please note that each pixel can consume up to a maximum of 54mA (when the red, green, and blue LEDs are on maximum), so the whole ring consumes ~864mA when fully lit up. You should not power this directly from an Arudino's 5V out pin (the regulator will likely go into thermal shutdown), but instead power the ring using an external 5V power supply that shares a common ground with the Arduino. The ring can change brightness (and current requirements) very quickly, so you should have a large reservoir capacitor on the power supply to smooth out the voltage a bit. Adafruit recommends a 1000uF electrolytic capacitor.

Also, be aware that it's very easy to damage the first pixel in the ring with ESD or overshoot on the data lines (see http://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=36&doc_id=1320518&page_number=2 for details). You can avoid this damage and protect your NeoPixels by placing a 300-500 ohm resistor in series with the data line. In the event that you do damage the first pixel, it's possible to jumper around it (or replace it), but this requires fine SMD soldering skills.

Adafruit has an excellent "Überguide" at https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neopixel-uberguide/overview that provides all the details you'll need for managing your NeoPixel correctly. I strongly recommend that you read through it first before connecting your NeoPixels to power, lest you damage them inadvertently.
